3 Millionth Adoption Event

On Saturday, June 23, PetSmart Charities introduced the 3 millionth pet adopted from PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers. Winchester, a two-year-old Border Collie mix, received a new lease on life when the Aukamp family of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, took him to his new forever home.

PetSmart Charities celebrates 3 million lives saved

With great fanfare, local and regional partners of the program met at the PetSmart store in Littleton, CO to congratulate the family and celebrate the continued success of the 13-year-old program. Winchester received a lifetime supply of food, training, grooming and PetsHotel or Doggie Day Camp stays from PetSmart, as well as an Optimum Wellness plan for one year from Banfield, the Pet Hospital. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our 3,400 adoption agency partners, 37,000 PetSmart associates, and millions of PetSmart customers, we have made a significant dent on pet overpopulation and euthanasia. Although nearly three to four million pets are still euthanized each year, that number has continued to drop since the late 1980’s when the animal welfare field estimated that as many as 17 million were euthanized annually.

Together with thousands of animal welfare agencies across North America, PetSmart Charities is getting a leg up on pet overpopulation. Like Winchester, one lucky pet is adopted every two minutes from one of the 935 PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers in North America. PetSmart Charities will continue to celebrate each adoption and work toward a day when our vision of a lifelong, loving home for every pet is finally achieved.
